Humble Tidbits
Humble is a city that is located in the Greater Houston metropolitan area. It became famous when it was considered an “Oil Boomtown.” Humble was the home of Humble Oil, a company part of the Exxon Corporation. In 1905, Humble made a name when it became the location of the largest producing oilfield in Texas.
In 2010, the city’s population was 15,133. Seven years later, the population slightly increased to 15,997 residents. The U.S. Census Bureau cited that Humble occupies a land area of 9.9 square miles. The climate in the city is classified as Cfa, meaning Humble experiences a humid subtropical climate. The coldest, average temperature is from 27 to 32 degrees Fahrenheit while the hottest, average is around 72 degrees or higher.
Historically, Humble’s first settler was a man named Joseph Dunman, and he moved in 1828. The town was historically significant because of its huge large oil industry. It was in 1903 when oil was first discovered in Humble.
The name Humble was taken from Pleasant Smith Humble, one of the town’s original residents. His home became Humble’s first post office. Not only that, Humble also managed several businesses. He was fruit stand vendor, a wood dealer, and even an attorney.
In 1904, a railroad service was added, and huge tank cars would ship out gallons of oil. A year later, Humble was the number one oil producing field in Texas. Up to this day, the oil fields are still operational and have more than 138,835,590 barrels and counting.
When the oil industry declined, many of the residents shifted to the timber industry. Humble became a city in 1933. It remained a quiet and peaceful city until the Houston Intercontinental Airport came to be. In 1969, Humble started to get busy because of the swarm of people visiting the area.
A notable car manufacturer in Humble is the DeLorean Motor Company. If you are a fan of the movie Back to the Future, the sports car used in that movie is in Humble. The DeLorean DMC-12 became remarkably famous when it appeared in the Back to the Future movies.
Next on the list is the Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens at 22306 Aldine Westfield Road. The garden is open daily from 8 AM to 5 PM. If you are looking for an oasis, this is it. The Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens is a perfect place to rest and recharge before you start a busy work schedule. Jesse H. Jones Park is another nature park in Humble. They are open on weekdays from 8 AM to 4 PM. Here, you can burn some calories with a bike ride or hike. Jesse H. Jones Park and Nature Reserve is brimming with trees, plants, and shrubs.
You can also unload your stress at the beach. Bring your family or even your dog with you. Whether you want to have a Saturday picnic or take a stroll on the wooden boardwalk, you will have an amazing time at Jesse H. Jones Park.
After visiting the two nature parks, you may want a change of scenery by visiting the Old MacDonald’s Farm at 3203 Fm 1960 Rd E. It is open daily, and they extend their operation hours during the weekends to accommodate more people. If you are planning for a family trip, the farm is an ideal place for the kids to run around and interact with the animals. There is even a pool, a train ride, and a playground for them! There is a great variety of farm animals. The Old MacDonald’s Farm caters to events such as birthday parties.
